Plan this trip

Vancouver is the rare city where you can kayak past harbour seals in the morning, eat some of the world's best sushi at lunch, and be standing on an alpine ridgeline by late afternoon. Pair it with Whistler — two hours north along the cliff-hugging Sea-to-Sky Highway — and you have a trip that packs coastal city culture and big-mountain wilderness into one seamless loop.

Vancouver in two days

Start with Stanley Park, the 400-hectare rainforest peninsula that dwarfs Central Park. Rent a bike and ride the 10 km seawall loop past totem poles, lighthouses, and beaches with mountain views. Granville Island's public market is the lunch stop — think fresh salmon, local berries, and chowder shacks. Save an evening for Gastown's restaurants and give a morning to the North Shore: the Capilano Suspension Bridge sways 70 meters above its canyon, or hike the free (and quieter) Lynn Canyon alternative.

  • Eat your way through Richmond's night market and dim sum rooms — Vancouver's Cantonese food rivals Hong Kong's.
  • Kitsilano Beach at sunset delivers the classic mountains-meet-ocean skyline view.
  • The Museum of Anthropology at UBC houses one of the world's great collections of Northwest Coast First Nations art.

Driving the Sea-to-Sky Highway

Highway 99 from Vancouver to Whistler is a destination in itself, threading between the fjord walls of Howe Sound and the Coast Mountains. Budget a half day and stop often: Shannon Falls tumbles 335 meters just off the road; the Sea-to-Sky Gondola in Squamish lifts you to a summit lodge, suspension bridge, and via ferrata; and Brandywine Falls drops into a basalt amphitheater ten minutes from a parking lot. Porteau Cove's pier is the sleeper stop for photographers.

Whistler, summer and winter

In winter, Whistler Blackcomb is the largest ski resort in North America — over 8,000 acres, a mile of vertical, and a village that hums until midnight. But summer might be even better value: the same lifts serve a legendary mountain bike park and hiking trails through wildflower meadows, and the PEAK 2 PEAK gondola spans the 4.4 km valley between the two mountains in eleven suspended minutes. Off the slopes, paddle the glass-clear chain of lakes on the Valley Trail, or soak at the Scandinave Spa under old-growth cedars.

Practical notes

  • You don't need a car in Vancouver, but you want one for the Sea-to-Sky (or book the scenic Skylynx coach).
  • Whistler lodging peaks over Christmas and August; shoulder months of June and September are the value plays.
  • Pack for four seasons in one day — coastal weather changes by the hour.
  • Reservations for popular hikes like Joffre Lakes (45 minutes past Whistler) are required in peak season.

Five to seven days covers the loop without rushing: two or three in the city, a slow drive north, and two or three in the mountains. It's the kind of trip that convinces people to move to British Columbia — consider yourself warned.
